Sierra Nevada

Northern Colombia, above the Caribbean · commonly 900–1,900 meters

Why this place matters

Place shapes
the cup.

The isolated Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta rises abruptly beside the Caribbean, creating unusual rain, shade, and temperature patterns. Indigenous communities and other smallholders maintain shade-grown traditions within an exceptionally diverse ecosystem.

Hand-picking and washed processing are common. Cups may lean toward chocolate, caramel, nuts, gentle fruit, and medium acidity and body. The region matters because coffee, culture, forest, and community stewardship are inseparable here.

Growing conditions

Altitude changes time

Higher or cooler sites generally slow cherry maturation, allowing sugars and aromatic compounds more time to develop. Warmer sites often bring fuller body and softer acidity.

Farm to mill

People shape clarity

Selective picking, fermentation, drying, sorting, and storage determine whether the character of the place arrives cleanly in the cup.

Why care

Origin becomes specific

Knowing the region helps you compare coffees thoughtfully and find the balance of sweetness, brightness, aroma, and body you enjoy.
